By episode 17 I’ve lost count of the scenes and characters that are repeats or reworks of earlier instalments in the franchise. That’s not even counting the retread of the Lynn Minmay story arc, aka Music Will Save Everything aka every series of Macross ever.
The latest example involved a bridge officer, a Skull Squadron leader, and references to a pineapple cake.
I’ve even spotted a Macross 7 reference, which is a neat trick since I’ve never seen Macross 7.
As I said I’m enjoying Macross Frontier, more or less, but these constant references sometimes throw me out of the story. Sometimes less is more.
The latest post about episode 9 Miss Macross is pure gold, and ends with “Micronians go home, I am retracting your license to fight a space war.” I remember that episode, and, yeah, any episode focussing on Minmei is going to have problems…
Prior to watching Adolescence of Utena I was expecting something that would completely blow my mind.
After all this film has something of a reputation as an exemplar of the “What the hell were they on?! And is it legal?” genre. For me the reality fell well short of that, but I did enjoy it as an alternative version of Revolutionary Girl Utena.
