A little while ago I wrote about how the tight focus on Fubuki helped Kantai Collection (2015, aka KanColle) succeed as a series. I certainly don’t have any issues with the KanColle we got – Fubuki-chan is a more than acceptable lead, and the series stands up well to rewatching.

However KanColle could have been a very different show. Episode 6 Destroyer Division 6 and the Battle of the Curry Seas! feels like the pilot for that other show. Continue reading →

This is a post that I’ve been mulling in the back of my mind since I effectively dropped Azur Lane halfway through the 2nd episode. I’m going to try to outline why I think KanColle and Fate/Grand Order – Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia succeeded in their first two episodes where Azur Lane failed. Continue reading →

Uma Musume Key VisualThe Spring 2018 season is upon us and the first less than inspiring premiere is Umamusume: Pretty Derby, which is basically built around the Moe Anthropomorphisms of racing horses. Complete with gender flipping (the original Special Week was a stallion).

There is, according to the prologue, an awareness that the Horse Girls are reincarnations of horses from another world. This presumably explains their names, although how they know what horses they’re the reincarnations of isn’t explained.

The single biggest problem with Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash is that Grimgar is reaching for something beyond the creator’s artistic grasp.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it is after all better to try for something special than settle for being just another generic show.

This does mean that much of my interest lies in working out what Grimgar is trying for, where it falls short of the mark, and why it fails.

There will be major spoilers ahead. Continue reading →

Kantai Collection worked best when it focused on slice of life for the anthromorphic moe battleship (among many others).

This was especially true when the adorably batshit crazy Kongou sisters[1] were Chewing the Scenery like the utterly shameless Large Hams that they are. Continue reading →
