Farewell Jack (1929 – 2016)

My uncle Jack Jorgensen (1929-2016) was one of the formative figures of my youth. He was one of the men who taught me to think, who always challenged me mentally to be more.

Jack was the man who nurtured many of my initial interests in IT. That’s no small thing when you consider that I’ve been earning a living for over twenty years now as, essentially, a thinker.

In his later years Jack researched a lot of the family tree, and was always good for a fascinating story or three, the sorts of things in any family that add spice and flavour to the names and the dates.

He passed away this week and I’ll miss him, I’ll miss his stories, and I’ll miss how he always challenged everyone in the family to be more.

Farewell Jack, and godspeed.

Merry Christmas 2015

family, friends, musings

Merry Christmas all in a year tinged with sorrow for many friends and family.

A beloved uncle who did much to challenge me to think as I grew up is in the grip of Alzheimer’s. I saw him earlier and it was hard: he’s not there anymore, there’s just an empty shell of the man I respected so much growing up.

The same is coming true for the father of a family friend. The friend has returned from London to Perth so that his children can know their grandfather whilst he’s still himself. My brother will be flying across to catch up with his friend whilst he’s here but the reason for the reunion is still a little sad.

Other friends have lost a grandmother in the last day or so. I don’t know how they’re coping but I’m thinking of them, and wish them well.

So make the best of your Christmas, stay safe, and spare a thought for those dealing with losses over an otherwise festive period.

I will be in Perth from Christmas Eve to New Years Day.  The flights were somewhat expensive, but worth it to see friends and family.

I will be in Perth early in in August for my birthday. I’ll fly in on the Thursday night and out on the Monday afternoon. There may be kayaking on the Saturday, which I may well regret given my current appalling levels of fitness. 🙂
