Encouragement of Climb, Yama no Susume

Encouragement of Climb Key Visual

The third season of Encouragement of Climb aka Yama no Susume has just wrapped up and is a lesson in the risks of attempting to shift the point of view.

For those unfamiliar with the first and second seasons, Yama no Susume has mostly focussed on Aoi’s perspective as the shy girl being dragged into being more active by Hinata. Whilst there have been episodes from Hinata’s perspective, particularly in the 2nd half of the second season, this show has mostly been about Aoi coming out of her shell. Continue reading →

This is going to be a little difficult as the stats page that I usually use for these posts has disappeared[1].

So there isn’t a 4th quarter rankings this year, nor is there an all-time ranking. Continue reading →

Flying Witch ended as it began: a charming show that was a simple pleasure to watch. A show that always made me smile, and often made me laugh.

The humour remained understated, and casually delivered throughout, which speaks to the consistently high writing standards for Flying Witch. As the saying goes “Drama is easy, comedy is hard”, and making comedy look effortless is harder again.

Which is why Flying Witch has such a high rewatch value for me, and is the latest addition to my list of comfort or zone out anime.

For that matter, so is Encouragement of Climb.

Since it’s been three years since I last asked, what are your new comfort anime?

When you reach the point of saying “I need to zone out now, time to pull up X”, what are the new shows that come to your mind first?

The second half of Encouragement of Climb season 2 (aka Yama no Susume) was a joy to watch.

Looking back over the episode list I don’t see any that I recall as being duds[1]. Whilst there was perhaps not as much mountain climbing, there was a lot of truly excellent character work. Continue reading →
