The premise of Robot Girls Z is to take the classic Go Nagai giant robots – Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger, and Grendizer to begin with – of 1970s anime and apply the usual moe anthropomorphism to turn them into cute girls. Continue reading
Despite a real Idiot Ball moment in the second act episode 8 That Little Girl is Older Than Us. The Preservation Was a Success?! Sleeping Beauty is a great Dirty Pair OAV episode.
Sleeping Beauty opens with a space liner emblazoned with a White Swan emblem cruising through space. Dr Gray Nea gets a drink from a waiter as masked, armed men burst into the lounge with gas grenades. Dr Nea flees to a stateroom to rescue his daughter Tia as she plays with a plushy.
As they leave the room a chip falls from the plushy under a vent in the wall at floor level. Tia sees this, Dr Nea does not. Continue reading
Episode 7 Revenge of the Muscle Lady! Is a Woman’s Spirit the Beauty of the Ring? is a welcome return to form for the Dirty Pair OAVs. It is a solidly constructed episode that’s also a lot of fun to watch.
Muscle Lady opens with Kei in an arena fight with an over muscled moron called Mad Bull. I strongly suspect that the design of the arena, a framework with dangling chains and weaponry, was inspired by Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Yuri is watching from the stands of an arena big enough to make the “underground” status of this fight claimed by Mad Bull dubious. Continue reading
When I decided to watch the Dirty Pair OAVs in a run for diversion before I reviewed them I really didn’t expect four weak episodes in a row. Fortunately episode 6 Are You Serious? Shocked at the Beach! Wedding Panic! is the last of these; they get better from here. Honest.
Kei and Yuri are on a cruise liner to Sargilco Island when Yuri gets hit on by a handsome dude. Yuri is unimpressed and more or less tells him to take a hike. The Lovely Angels have been sent to the island to infiltrate a counterfeiting operation run by the Casteno Family, who also more or less run the island. Continue reading
Continuing with the run of weak Dirty Pair OAV episodes we come to episode 5 And so, Nobody’s Doing It Anymore.
There’s some great world building in this episode. Pity about the rest of it.
Once again And so, Nobody’s Doing It Anymore revisits a theme of an earlier episode, in this case the gambling theme of Go Ahead, Fall in Love! Love is Russian Roulette. However where Russian Roulette was a fun caper, And so, Nobody’s Doing It Anymore is a rather more tedious affair of the Lovely Angels sent to retrieve the number one trouble consultant who has fallen into the bad habit of gambling.
