Once you acknowledge that Children Who Chase Lost Voices is an astonishingly pretty film to look at, there really isn’t much else to recommend it.

This is a film that attempts to tackle loss and grief through the Orphean myth (or Izanagi and Izanami), and manages to produce something that felt empty, soulless, unfocussed (to me at least).

Makoto Shinkai is an amazing artist and animator, pretty much everything I’ve seen of his has been drop dead gorgeous to look at.

However I’m coming to the conclusion that he is, at best, an average writer.

I’m really beginning to hope that The Garden of Words had a good writer that wasn’t Makoto Shinkai at the helm.

I’m glad I saw Children Who Chase Lost Voices, but I doubt I’ll be rewatching it in a hurry (if ever).
