The Secret World of Arrietty

I just saw The Secret World of Arrietty in Canberra at Dendy.  Based on the Mary Norton novel The Borrowers this is a quintessential Studio Ghibli, although not one directed by Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata.

Hiromasa Yonebayashi‘s directorial debut is an impressive piece of work. This is a strong family film that fits well within the Ghibli oeuvre.

One nice touch was the nod to the original book by subtitling references to the big people as “Human Beans”. 🙂

One not so nice touch was the white subtitles which didn’t always work, although the translation felt good.

This is one I’ll be looking forward to getting on BluRay with a view to a more detailed review then.

In the meantime: definitely worth seeing on the big screen if you can manage it.
